Rebecca Abel,
LCSW

I have recently retired from UCSF after 20 years working with pregnant and postpartum women. During that time I have been privileged to part of the lives of many women, and couples, as they struggle to have healthy pregnancies, cope with high risk pregnancies, and deliver their babies – only to fall into a state of unforeseen depression or anxiety. As the provider of services in the UCSF Mood Assessment Clinic I have seen hundred’s of such women and have helped them understand their complicated feelings about new motherhood and to make a plan that will get them into a better state of mind as quickly as possible. In my private practice I am putting all this experience to work. I can both assess mood issues as well as provide the in-depth counseling essential for new parents who want to get on with parenting and not stay stuck in depression/anxiety.

The transition to parenthood can be challenging for those of us who have had difficult childhoods and/or inadequate parenting. Therapy is a great way to get on the right track with yourself, your partner and your child. As the mother of two grown sons and a wife, in a 25 year marriage, I believe that I can offer the personal as well as professional experience necessary to help women and couples negotiate their new roles and relationships.
